Who was Jackie Poor?
Jackie Poor was the devoted mother of Amy and Tyler Poor who loved spending time in Newburyport, particularly at Wishbasket and Jabberwocky bookstore at the Tannery and Sandy Point State Reservation. She was unfailingly kind and committed to her family friends and colleagues. She died from Ovarian Cancer in October 2009 at the age of 61.

Who was Paula Holm?
Paula T. Holm was the devoted mother of two children: Ryan M. Bonner and Lauren H. Bonner. A 1975 graduate of the University of Delaware, she lived in Marblehead, MA and Newburyport, MA for over 20 years and greatly enjoyed her first career with Trans World Airlines. After earning two Master’s degrees, one in Special Education and one in Reading, she began working at North Shore Technical High School where she quickly became a beloved educator and valued colleague.

Paula was also an avid and accomplished athlete, completing 16 marathons, including 13 Boston Marathons. She was on the Board of Directors at the Winner’s Circle Running Club, in Salisbury, MA and directed a successful road race for many years. Tennis, biking and sailing were among her other sports. She loved being outside, traveling the world and playing Scrabble.

According to her family and friends, Paula’s journey with ovarian cancer involved “living more than six full, active, productive and loving years” with the disease. To have her name on the GNOCA Run/Walk is to continue her deep joy in encouraging others to lead energized, purposeful lives with a mind to making a a highly positive difference.

Over the years, Paula’s husband, Bruce L. Vogel, owner of Newburyport’s Plum Island Coffee Roasters, has generously made his shop available to GNOCA for their regular meetings and other special events. Promoting awareness of the subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer, supporting area women already diagnosed with the disease, and funding research for the cure are the group’s goals. Fortunately, the inspiring examples and giving ways of both Paula Holm and Bruce Vogel are helping to make these goals more feasible.
